What kinda music have y'all critters been jamming out to lately? Got any favorites in mind? Earworms you just can't get outta your head?

Annnnd, to kick us off:

For me, It's been The latest Gorrillaz Album, "The Mountain."

This is gonna be a bit of a crosspost with another forum I'm in so do forgive (or don't forgive, be EVIL and MAD AT ME) but it comes with an amusing story, I prommy!

Last Wednesday was especially one of the worst days I've experienced in recent memories, got rear ended in a car wreck in the morning and had to limp my poor busted up beater over to a bodyshop + rental place in my hometown in the afternoon. On the way over, I was treated to a TORRENTIAL downpour/thunderstorm, slow going, slippy roads, like zero visibility and lotsa lightning.

On the way back tho The storm cleared up and the sun broke through in a few spots, which kinda lead to the most absurd musical experience I think I've ever had?

So I'm wearing the most DOUR kubric stare as I'm coasting up the hillside back towards my apartment. I'd just cried a bunch at the car rental place, I was sweaty and rainsoaked and disheveled as all hell... Sopping wet, pathetic looking (and feeling) deercowsheepie mode. Throughout the ride the rain had slowed to a drizzle, but as I was hitting the homestretch The stormclouds eventually break and the sun shines through, kicking up a rainbow while my music player shuffles into "the Happy Dictator."



The SHEER cognitive dissonance of feeling absolutely dogshit miserable while 2D roleplays as a fucked up cartoon happyworld dictator and an honest to goodness rainbow stretches out overhead instantly grounded me, I felt so insane that I stack overflowed back into semi-normalcy

My musical tastes lately have been even more eclectic than usual, but one that's really stuck has been a track dropped in April by one of my all-time favorite bands, Rabbit Junk, continuing their trend of antifascist industrial metal bangers:



"You Gotta Get Through Me" isn't QUITE up there, in my opinion, with the track that solidified them as never leaving my top 3 bands again ("Shadow Horizon"), but it's still a strong, strong showing, and its refrain of "It's you against our love!" has already crystallized in my headmeats as a slogan for this year.

Tip of the iceberg of the kind of nonsense I end up falling into on top of what I'm into, which is a lot... x3

I also own "The Mountain" by Gorillaz on CD as of months ago, second on that being a great album. They've made good albums since, but that was maybe their most meaningfully great album since "Plastic Beach" IMO.

On loop, the new album Too Much Not Enough by Daði Freyr. Legit our favourite musician of this decade so far.

There's definitely some bangers in the tween years (like "Humility", "Saturn Bars", I'm a big fan of "Hallelujah Money" and "Skinny Ape" too), but The Mountain certainly feels like their most solid package in a lil while!

Oh, definitely! Maybe it was 'cause I hyped myself up that much over "Humanz" but I liked the hell out of "Momentz" and "Sleeping Powder" (same era, though not an album track) and I did really like "Song Machine" when it was out, especially "The Pink Phantom". A big positive of an act like Gorillaz who are intentionally so multi-faceted is that the amount of things others can pick as what they like from them can differ between each person. :3

Thank you for sharing that video, btw. That song passed me by until now but its great and the video is even better, maybe the most an actually-contemporary video successfully (and intentionally) made me laugh as hard as I did just now!

They missed out of making my three album selections, but I opted to go and listen back to my favourite musicians of the late 2000s, the collaboration between dan le sac and Scroobius Pip.



Quite a bit different from the poppy tones of the others, they're a quite gritty electronic/hip-hop duo. Like Daði, they made a point of not making songs about the stereotypical rap subjects, instead focusing more on storytelling about relationships, politics and society.

Been deep-diving into The Beach Boys a little more lately so I finally listened to the whole of the "Pet Sounds" album (the 1996 stereo version, specifically).

Miiiight be a controversial take but I think it's a liiiiittle good. ;3 (I understand the appeal and it was a super comfy and stimulating listen, haha)

The Beach boys are always an interesting group to me, I like their vocal harmonies and it's pleasant listening, but I never really connected with their music all that much! But a lot of the artists I *do* connect with were inspired by the beach Boys in some ways (Grouplove, Foster the People) so they've always been this like, faint echo in a lot of my daily listening!

Perfectly okay to like artists/groups who were inspired by others but not be as into the artists/groups that inspired them. :3

I'm not specifically a super-fan or anything but online rabbit holes and how media interests lead and follow me lead towards this stuff lately for me, I guess. :O

Pet Sounds is such an incredible album... I haven't clicked with anything else The Beach Boys have made, but that album transports me into another world with that soundscape. Wall of Sound is truly an incredible technique



Imaginal Disk has been on repeat for the last 3 months... I've barely been able to listen to anything except for it. It feels dreamlike, possibly the best pop album that's ever been made. It makes complete sense how RateYourMusic rated this the #1 album of 2024 (which is where I discovered it, alongside most my music :P)

Re-listened to "The New Abnormal" by The Strokes before I finished VR stuffs for the night and it's still ace. Can't remember when it was the last time I fully listened to this, but this still hits like it had before. :3

Here's a song I listen to every now and then and think about a lot.
I remember being introduced to First Aid Kit back in college through a few of their other songs, and since then I've been a big fan of their music. This song in particular makes me feel hopeful, to keep going and hoping for the best in anything life throws at me and all the people I've met.

Something a little more obscure and left-of-the-dial now. Found one of the songs on this through its use in a late-80's UK TV commercial in a video someone made compiling a bunch of them (yes, I'm that kind of dork, deal with it) and it's now a repeat relisten for me.


A fusion of the kind of distinctively of-its-time 80's music I was introduced to and grew up with as a child with the weirder and more creatively out-there edges of the kind of music I'm into now. This was only one of 2 albums the band, hailing from Scotland, released with the other one being a major-label debut that didn't set the world on fire. There's something about the strangely-playful energy of this that really appeals to me. No idea, it's fun to find music you wouldn't of bumped into otherwise through the most esoteric of origins!

(Pssst, this may also be a significant inspiration for another OC idea of me that I've been developing for years that may or may not happen depending on Things, but whelp... xD)
