The Inevitable "Fav Movies" Thread

Yep! Let's talk about what movies you particularly really like, while we're here. :3

I like/love way too many movies so I guess I'll keep it to a Top 10 of what's my favs as of the time I'm writing this (3rd June 2026). Shoutout to the normie Letterboxd account I have for allowing this to be easier for me to keep tabs on through the years:

10. The Muppet Christmas Carol
Pure concentrated Christmas in film form, IMO. Really funny, wonderfully adapted and emotional resonant in all the right places, it's as good a movie one with such a title needs to be!
9. Mad Max: Fury Road
My favourite action movie. Kinetic, stimulating and meaningful with some incredible practical filmmaking. Pretty instantly quotable for a dialogue-sparse film too!
8. Parasite (2019)
One of the last films I saw theatrically before the COVID pandemic, it's just an all-round incredibly tight and impressively varied film with great messages and some similarly great ways to explore them. Deserved its reputation.
7. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Disney Animation at its very peak. Some of the most beautiful Western animation out there, complimenting a deep and resonant adaptation of the classic story, alongside some of Menken-Ashman's best songwork.
6. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio
I was at the World Premiere in London for this and that was a day I'll never forget. What a wonderfully multi-layered film this was, with care oozing out of every frame of its stop-motion animation. As fun as it is moving.
5. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
The best kind of films to me are those that successfully get you into something you didn't think you could. I'm usually not a fan of murder-mysteries, but this series is sublime and this particular one does a great job saying how and why.
4. Everything Everywhere All at Once
Maybe the most Movie-movie ever made, but in the best way possible. Layers and layers and layers of greatness here and while it may seem overwhelming at first, it's more overwhelming just how great it all is as a whole.
3. The Truman Show
Cried my little eyes out as a kid seeing this expecting a typical Jim Carrey comedy and getting far more than I bargained for emotionally. Fortunately as an adult, I realised it was immaculate so I forgive it!
2. Robot Dreams
I'm maybe the most irritating cheerleader for this film you could know. It physically hurts to condense my thoughts on why I feel this is incredible, but boy does it beyond deliver. So funny, moving and charming that it doesn't even NEED dialogue.
1. Jurassic Park
The best Blockbuster-type film out there IMO. Another film that has many layers of qualities and ideas to it but is handled and executed as good as it possibly can be. One of those films I could rewatch forever, like I may of done, and still enjoy.

How about your's? You don't need to give this a Top 10 like I did or format your answers in any particular way, so long as you're speaking from your mind and heart on your choices.

Naturally also, goes without saying but everybody's tastes in media like this are subjective (as they should, even when of course our tastes will be similar every once in a while) and this is not a contest so y'all play nice and be willing to listen to other's choices and be understanding rather than ick on anybody's thoughts, alrighty? :3

You said it already, but Everything Everywhere All At Once is my absolute favourite.

It gets some smack talk for being too 'confusing' because of the genre-mashing, multiverse jumping and being multi-lingual, but it's really quite simple: it's foremost a story about nihilism, about finding purpose in a universe that doesn't care. It's also a story about failing marriages, failing businesses, intergenerational trauma, immigration, homophobia, and taxes.

Rewatching it never, ever fails to make me cry. I relate to it so darn much.
Ooooh, well I knew you dug the film a bunch before but somehow missed the fact of it being your fav film until now! Well hey, that's good to know. :3

Films like that make me wonder why I'm nit easier to make cry as an adult despite still having the capacity to be moved. Definitely not the film's fault, though! If anything, I don't blame those who do given what happens at points and how effectively they explore all that!
Still been meaning to revisit that properly sometime but I certainly understand how the visuals of that can grab folks. :3
I'm seconding Bloat here, EEAO is my absolute favorite film of all time, it speaks deeply to some struggles I've faced in my life and remains, I think, one of the most beautiful and poignant rebuttals to nihilism out there

Other movies I like, I'd say the menu! It's nothing super flashy or fancy as far as horror movies go but that ending scene is something I think about all the time, such a fantastic last act to that filn

Been meaning to check out "The Menu" since my brother saw it at a film fest, where it was the Surprise FIlm pick that year! Perhaps your endorsement will lead me to it sooner, who knows. :D

Hey, it was ahead of its time! Maybe the first taste of 'em taking what was planned to be a TV show and stitching the episodes into a "movie", just not one released theatrically but I jest. x3c
I definitely haven't seen enough movies, but I quite enjoy Miyazaki's work... My favorite of his is probably Porco Rosso, which I actually just finished today! Miyazaki is able to fit so much depth and maturity to his films that I wish more animation attempted (and that I wish more audience picked up on, sometimes the way Studio Ghibli films are seen as "aesthetic" and "cozy" pains me)

My favourite Miyazaki movie's "My Neighbour Totoro" myself. Just feel it has what he does so well down to its bare essentials (in a good way) and its simplicity makes what it says and how feel more easily affecting...though in all honesty, it's also because I'm a sucker for the creatures there, including of course the Totoro themself.

Nothing wrong with liking Miyazaki's movies, certainly plenty of reason to, though sometimes I do wish the movies from Ghibli that weren't done by Hayao also were given good shots too. One of my fav Ghibli movies happens to be from someone who only made a movie there once: "The Cat Returns". It's not even like it's totally immaculate, I'd certainly recommend it more if it wasn't so bizarrely short, but there's something about the creativity and storytelling it *does* have which really appealed to me.

But I blather. Been meaning to rewatch "Howl's Moving Castle" for an eternity and...man, I guess "Porco Rosso" too. I feel like its been even longer since I saw that as well!

Oh, The Cat Returns is another one I hold dear to my heart! It definitely deserves more love: I barely see anyone talk about it, though I suppose they're probably only discussing their favorites. It's hard, because The Cat Returns is good, but everything Ghibli has made is just as good, so it gets overshadowed. The Baron is probably one of my favorite characters in fiction =v= though all of the characters are lovely



This song makes me so emotional... I wish more people were to hear it

Good choice! Got to see it in IMAX before it left those screens (was very, very interested in seeing it in 70mm IMAX after but at least for now, I've kinda let go of the opportunity to do that, weh) and I'm VERY excited to check it out again to see how it holds up without the heightened experientiality of seeing it that way.

But yeah, one of my fav films of the year so far for myself too. :D Just simply a really well-made and wonderfully resonant piece of sci-fi.
