My beloved mid-2000s highly stylized DS JRPG..... It's got a REALLY unique combat system (named the Stride Battle Cross System) that really makes the Hardware shine, honestly! It fully utilizes both the dual layout and the touchscreen, it's got you passing combos back and forth between your party members on the bottom + top screen, where your attacks and abilities are controlled through a bunch of different touch screen inputs on the bottom, while the top utilizes the system's buttons in a weird lil car-based minigame! It feels SO fucking fluid and fun to pull off once you've got the hang of it, and I fuckin LOVE the style and charm just oozing from every corner of this game...

And that story, oh man that story.... I came across this game as a disillusioned, jaded teen who thought she was hot shit and didnt need any friends and holy fuck did it suckerpunch me emotionally and forever change the way I thought about things, It is SUCH a beautiful exploration on the ways people connect and how that changes us, for better or for worse. I HIGHLY recommend you check it out if you haven't, it's one of my alltime favorites!

Are we doing these one at a time per post, I take it or...?

Of course would like to oblige (after enough think-throughs on how I rank certain games and why, which I don't do as much of a clear-cut job of for myself as I do with music and especially films), just wanna get a feel-through of how the etiquette should be before moving forward on that. :O

No particular format on this thread, I was just starting us off with a quick example! You can submit multiple in a reply or just one, whatever you're feeling!

a// horde shooters and fast, twitchy shooters are my kinda thing. far far west has hit me like a freight train that is also on fire. and exploding. i've managed to make a shotgun with two dozen rounds loaded dump its entire magazine in a second, have launched myself across half a level at >100m/s more than once, and at one point activated something that just sped up the entire game's tickrate by a fifth. i don't think i've even scratched the surface yet. this game came out in early access a little over a month ago. it's got the sauce. i'm done for

Oh I LOVED this game when it came out, even though I didn't have anyone to streetpass with. I loved that harder fights and multiple chains of battles gave you not just better, but more varied rewards too!
Oh boy, I have a lot of favorite video games, it's hard to really list them all immediately.

I did make a list of games that I've played and really liked, in no particular order, using the website listed here:

I think my tastes in video games are all over the place, but generally I like playing games that also let you play with friends and other people for fun. I'm always down to trying some games with folks whenever there's a chance!

We have, many, many favorites. It would be very hard to narrow down. So instead whenever we think of it we'll just post One Of Our Favs.

Of course, have to open this with our GOTY 2025, Look Outside

Huuuuuge content warning for body horror, not embedding any screenshots for a reason.

Game Link

Look Outside is a blend of "Survival Horror" games and a more typical turn based RPG, very heavily inspired by the NES cult classic "Sweet Home" (which is the direct inspiration for Resident Evil). The entire game takes place within one apartment building that has been heavily corrupted by a mysterious cosmic phenomenon that horrifically transforms anyone who is exposed to it.

Gameplay consists of leaving your apartment to explore your surroundings, gather supplies, fight monsters and search for survivors who are untouched or at the very least retained their lucidity even if they did get transformed. People need your help, and they can help you back. Some may even join your party. You also have to maintain your basic needs like food and sleep, and take care of yourself so you don't fall into depression. There is a core story you're progressing and objectives to complete, all within a 15 day time limit.

Combat is fairly typical Turn Based RPG combat but with a lot of nuance in terms of resource management, team building, and optimization. Supplies are scarce and many healing items can only be used outside of combat, including the best healing items (home-cooked meals) which you can only use at your apartment itself. Damage type weaknesses and resistances are incredibly important and a badly matched team can severely struggle to take down a difficult enemy, and conversely a well matched team can feel unstoppable. Every potential party member has unique skills and things they excel at, and every weapon and some other equipment grant skills to further tailor each person's performance.

I love this game so much because of how... human, it is. The writing is genuinely excellent, flipping constantly between serious, somber, scary, silly, heartfelt, and more on a dime and doing it with class. You get sucker punched by the humor when you least expect it and it can be really funny. Characters feel incredibly passionately written and very human, people coping with a horrible tragedy however they can, whether that be laughing at objectively horrible things, playing cards and drinking coffee like nothing happened, being altruistic, or completely collapsing mentally.

The characters are absolutely the highlight of this game, backed up by genuinely unbelievably good spritework and an amazing soundtrack. The game is a feast for the eyes, ears, and for the RPG super-optimizers in the crowd if you can stomach the body horror.
Teacyn (they/them/balloon), ⭕Materia (they/them/balloon), 🪶Rhalani (they/them/balloon), 🍀Chlori (she/her/balloon), 🐜Cynthia (she/her/balloon), and 🎈Rex (it/him/balloon).

Insert fancy signature here.

This made responding to this thread a whole lot easier! So hey, here's mine. I've largely not grown out of my childhood's game tastes but there are exceptions, of course. xD (Like Snivy, this is in No Perticular Order, btw)

We're not much of a capital-G Gamer™, so our go-to games are all fairly casual games, mostly being management or lifestyle sims: The Sims, Cities: Skylines, Factorio, Prison Architect, TCG Card Shop Simulator, Transport Tycoon, RollerCoaster Tycoon, the like.

Other than simulators, We've been playing games of the Pokémon franchise ever since they first launched on these shores. In a similar vein, beeps frickin' loves Cassette Beasts. Super Animal Royale is fun sometimes too.
I definitely find myself playing games less and less nowadays, so when I am playing something, I am usually doing something a bit more on the casual side. So my faves right now are Lumines Arise and Tetris Effect probably, those are all timers for me

I did just play through Diablo II Remastered with my boyf and I think it firmly cemented that Diablo II is still one of my favourite games of all time. It's just -so- good, I love it so much

Noise Reduction chains were SO cool, TWEWY genuinely is like such a hidden gem from the DS era!! It's such a beautiful and stylish experiement, I wish we got more like it! Glad to see some other critters have seen it 'round!

Couch (Sized) co-op gamer~ That's super cool tho, I feel like I dont see that much love for coop as much per se nowadays, even with multiplayer exploding in popularity it's usually always PVP or something!

Now this, I didn't know! I was aware of the Korean Webtoon and Television series by the name of Sweet Home, which explore a very similar concept, but I had no idea the name/idea had roots even further back! That's REALLY cool though, woah!

It's what really drew me in, I love how in the face of all this, unfathomable horror and change you can genuinely start a found family, you can band together and just... Learn to accept each other and survive with each other regardless of what affliction (or lack thereof) you may carry, it is SUCH a beautiful celebration of humanity in a (intentionally) ironic way and I fucking Adooooore it!!!

I'ver been thinking about Mass effect a lot again lately, genuinely I think one of the coolest series out there. You get to carry your character and decisions through like, 3 installments of space opera and it's genuinely incredible, I ADORE the worldbuilding they really immerse you in throughout the first two games and guh, it's so so goooood!

Tetris Effect is so cool, I've never played myself (despite wanting to!) but I watch my partner Mae play it every once in a while it's just visually such a treat on top of what's already rock solid abt tetrist!

Thanks, Hoofus!

That being said, *really* kicking myself that I didn't include "Tetris Effect" on that initial grid now. @.@ I too love "Tetris Effect", it's one of those "get on every platform you want" games to me and one I'd even recommend to newcomers of VR (where the VR version goes, of course) to settle them in with due to the simple gameplay and how low-stakes the visuals are. Maybe I'd replace "Super Monkey Ball" with that in hindsight but ah well, haha. With you and Mirina on that!

In my free time, you'll uuuusually catch me playing TF2C. Since it doesn't carry over TF2's matchmaking system, it's infinitely easier to drop in on a community server (of course, they're all community servers) and just have a bit of fun for a round or two any evening. There's almost always one of their official servers around capacity. Plus, some of the unique sidegrades they have in the game are so cool that I'm not sure I'd want to go without them at this point.
Most importantly? No cosmetics, so I don't feel poor.

Aside from that? I've been a Pokemon girlie since my earliest memories, and that sure as heck isn't gonna chance any time soon.

for me is kinda hard to rank stuff I like in any order, or even pick what's a favourite ::P so at least from the top of my head a few that have left quite the impression on me in no specific order
  • minecraft - I mean, basic pick, but it's the game that kinda introduced me to games as a community and creative thing instead of just an individual experience, and to online communities in general, seeing people share builds, joining servers, gameplays, mods, and I'm talking about the 1.4.x to 1.8.x era when I was most engaged with it, made a few friends at the time, and so on
  • deltarune - ok, this one I put as one of the best games of all time, I love everything about it
  • death's door - it's such a neat little zelda/dark soul's-ish game with fun gameplay and such a neat aesthetic (and cute crow) and fun characters, but I specially loved it for the theme of death being taken in a not dark way but also not in a diminishing way, and I played it at a time where I was going trough some stuff and it did help me a bit in not being as sad
  • need for speed underground 2/gta san andreas/knight rider 2 (pc) - these are more of childhood classics, stuff that was installed on the pc at home so I played, even though I didn't know what as happening as I didn't understand english, but just going around them was fun for the time

Our all time favorite game? Surprised we haven't seen it earlier in the thread.

Image

We're a sucker for atmosphere and story telling, so the whole STALKER franchise has a spot in our heart as well, as well as similar games like Project Silverfish (which is basically just STALKER but furries.)

We also tend to come back to what I can best describe as "creative games". We have our annual Minecraft period, Valheim period (1.0 soon, woo! Also incredibly fun to play with international friends as a swede, since for once everyone else is pronouncing things incorrectly ) and even Dwarf Fortress period. Give us the ability to build, and we will.

We suppose Easy Delivery Co. is on the list as well, because of how cozy the experience is.

Also, uh, Tribal Hunter is fun. For reasons.

The Sims
Used to play a bunch back in the day, kinda lost its charm once we started having to work though...

A few years back we played Sims 3 on a virtual machine in Azure, where we put the entire game in RAM on a RAM-disk. We think it's the first time we've seen it not stutter, even with all expansions loaded. Shame it cost €2 per hour to run that VM.
