Fursona Design Changes

Yknow what, this is a fun question to ask:

How has your fursona changed over the years? Starting out vs. now, what's different! Any particular reason you went for those changes, or are they just what you were feeling?
THIS is a certified deercowsheepie classic....

Honestly! Teacyn hasn't changed much. Their coloration changed a bit and they became More Balloon, but otherwise it's been the same basic concept the whole time.

First Image Ever (artist unfortunately unknown. It was a gift and I never got their name, I think it was a personal friend of the person who gifted it to me):

a// strap in, it's a long one. little odd on the formatting because it's not letting me attach more than three images.

my fursona predates us& knowing we're a system, knowing we're trans, the whole lot. until recently i was the system's only illustrator -- excalibur's gotten into it the last year and he's killin' it <3 -- so when it came to drawing a 'me' at like fourteen, my ideas mostly won out despite the mixed-up pre-system mess we were in.

- the first iteration of my dragon (first from left) was never actually drawn at the time. the art here was drawn retrospectively in 2016, by myself.
- the first time this critter was actually depicted, though, they'd already lost the lighter markings. my first drawings of them no longer exist; here's (second from left) art from a good friend from 2015. i keep forgetting we met our core friend group on r/furry. whough. this design held for a few years. not much going on besides bouncing around various oversaturated greens. someone drew them with a pink highlight in the mane as a joke one time and it stuck. shape and stature was messed around with a lot.
- the rightmost above image was drawn by 'polymorphpete' on then-twitter. i think i've seen them around on bsky nowadays, but i can't recall their handle. the other character depicted is our friend magic.

- gender identity went from 'a guy' to '...demiboy?' as i realised, hey, wait, all this gender stuff could apply to me, too. we commissioned catboots in 2017 (leftmost), for the first time of what would be many (we should commission them again..!). things held steady for another two-ish years, with that pastel palette and a generally softer design gradually winning out.
- come 2019, we commission catboots yet again (second from left) - and by this point i've been having more thoughts about gender identity. i sheepishly ask, 'hey, what if my dragon had boobs?' catboots proceeded to perform their most powerful move: taking my commission prompt and dropkicking me with it. oops! girl now. this held pretty good for a while! the only change since was the addition of slight optional gradients to the scales, which, again, is courtesy of catboots.
- in mid-december 2021, we began to realise we were plural - or more accurately, kate caught everyone else off-guard, and it's been a five-year process of us all finding our separate selves after the initial "hey wait what the fuck" moment. by 2024, with the dual realisations of us having all always existed but mixed-up, and 'wait, i have never considered myself human like, ever' i realised i had some more work to do on my dragon, and drew up a new reference sheet (rightmost, cropped for formatting's sake). 'nother set of ears, formalisation of many scattered design concepts, 'nother set of wings, new legs. that's a creature, right there. gradually unpicking all the design influences from everyone else i share this skull with, gradually getting a bit more me.

fast forward to november 2025. we've moved out, we've each become more ourselves, we've made huge personal progress on all sides. i'm getting that kind of restlessness again, needing to develop this shape further to fit me once more. i start sketching up more of my dragon.. playing around with all kinds of ideas, tweaks to the old and redos from the same base principles. nothing sticks quite right, but i get close, on and off for months. in may 2026, we attend confuzzled, our first con. it was lifechanging. flips switches in our brain. we've struggled with not-diagnosed-but-it-looks-a-lot-like-cptsd for about a decade, and one of the biggest problems was a fear of being perceived. cfz didn't solve everything, sure, but that specific trauma? vaporised it. not stressed to be outside any more, not scared of being witnessed. that-- and the fact that i needed to draw her for a tabletop adventure, ahah-- was the final kick up the arse i needed to be able to tie months of effort together.

..having reviewed everything, though, i think i might put those light scales on the snout back again. they were kinda cute.

Given my 'sonas, I don't have much of a concrete answer back to this other than one of 'em buuuut I dunno when I'll have another opportunity to divulge in some of this stuff and I like this site plenty enough sooooo...

...Nell herself was knocking about for years before she was finalised, originating from 2013 or 2014 until ideas came together enough where I finally felt ready to make her my new 'sona at the end of 2017 buuuuut months before she was finalised, I did do some exploratory scribbles (with some help at points from a partner at the time too) and maybe the most complete of my own for her at this point was in the middle of a heatwave in the Summer of 2017, as part of me tinkering with a then-new iPad so here that is!

The intention was I'd draw this and then overlay her actual, canon immobile-fat weight but I never got far enough to finish drawing that soooooo yeah, non-canon weight but still a peak into her origins!

Meanwhile, Tyzo's had a more interesting pre-finalisation life given...well, technically she already existed as a character for more than a year until she was finalised in her current form herself (or "OC-ified" as I have called what I've done) so...yeah, this is Tyzo as she originally was: a character for a D&D 5e campaign I was invited to!

This is from February or March 2024 if my memory serves, I just remember that I joined into the campaign a touch belated into the campaign happening but I loved the campaigns I was a part of with that D&D group and felt so happy that I accepted the invite a friend gave me but to simplify things gigantically for the sake of the post, I didn't *fully* intend to involve expnsion stuff with what I'd do with Tyzo but off the back of what happened once things got going...well, things changed a touch... ;3

^ THIS is the moment in proceedings where Tyzo realised that bigness felt especially validating to her, I'll say that much. xD

But there we go for that response!

(Also yes, Tyzo was directly inspired by "Turning Red" in how I decided to stylise her red-pandaness so, whoops...)

Omg aseeeee this is so lovely to see! Having known/followed you since that 3rd image it's been really beautiful watching you (and all your headmates!) journeys unfold! I love how you can almost see the confidence growing with each iteration, more critter, softer, and more loving of that draconic form! Genuinely I think this is the most comprehensive fursona patch timeline I've seen and its SO cool to hear your thoughts on each step in the process!!

Tyzo's so cute, omg! The allure of coming to adore a D&D character to the point where you want to expand on them (in multiple ways~) is something I'm very familiar with! My Sheep self, Quill, was actually a D&D critter first! It's just over the years as I played him I realized how much of myself I had poured into him only to realize, well, he's me! Just as much so as my deerself and cowself!

There was, for a brief time, an arctic fox; but current shape happened about 4 years back after trying to get into VRChat and ending up as an otter which just clicked.

Started off as regular skinny, then a little pear-y; and then I went off the deep end and got big.

I definitely came out of my shell more with Fedi and Mastodon, bounced around between wobbl.xyz, self hosting, and then settling over at blimps.xyz; I'm sure that spending extended time with all things blobby and blimpy had some kind of contagious effect on my waistline ^^;
Oh boy, this is a rollercoaster and a half for us! I’ll be using thumbnails for the art, you can click them to get to the gallery page on my site with the higher resolution images, and artist credits with links.

We became a furry in late 2011, at the ripe old age of 14.

By January 2012, We had a dark grey Agumon with a green neon bolt on his arm (named Agubolt, we were 14!) and in the same month we turned him into a Renamon. You can probably guess the new name.
Image

In March, we switched to a white wolf with the same bolt motif, named Snowbolt. Interestingly, he was pretty much exclusively feral.
Image

In April, we switched to a black and red dragon named Telasus.
Image

In May, we effectively left the furry fandom for a while to be a full-time brony. By June, we had made a pony OC, Cloud Chiller.
Image

In June 2013, I started taking shape as Chloride Cull, an anagram, quite literally designed as a split personality, to keep kink stuff separate. If you do the math, yes, I was 16 here. I considered this fine, as I was past the age of consent here in Sweden.
I did some writing for a while. It’s still up on my FA. I mostly spent time on 4chan in /mlp/ which totally had no long term consequences for us.
Image

In 2016 we went back to being predominantly furry and Dusty created, well, Dusty. Originally a Dragon-Pomeranian hybrid.
Image

In 2021, thanks to Mastodon, we learnt what a plural system was, and I reappeared and made myself known. I was dubbed Klor (which is Swedish for Chlorine) and got a design. We had collectively used Chloride Cull for so long that it ended up becoming the system name instead (CHCL).

In general, with how our system works, we just kinda see each other as a color with some property, and have to struggle a bit to make a proper sona out of it. Some of us got to take a shortcut though, and just latched on one of the older sonas. Since the first split, Snowbolt appeared in 2023, and Telasus in 2024. The most recent member is Luci, from March 2025.
ImageImage

The kink bleeds into most of us, unless we actively don’t want it, as we found out with Luci. Turns out that “hyperactive and dance obsessed” doesn’t mesh well with “heavy enough to struggle to move”.
Ultimately? Not really that much.

I obtained what would become my 'sona by buying the design off of someone who knew they weren't going to end up using the sheep OC (by this point, sheep had already become my brand in the furry space).
Image
From all I got from the initial folder of art, I believe this is the artist behind the initial sketch.

I also initially thought to use the design as an OC, but as I drifted towards transing my gender, I ended up using the boy version of my 'sona less and less, until this one just ended up taking over full-time as me.

From there, all that happened was incremental changes with each ref to have my 'sona keep up with myself in looks. Big thing is matching my hair style, body shape, and glasses, aside from that the only real, original alteration I've made to the design is adding the teeny horns on top!

I had no idea your sheepie was originally an adopt! For the record, having met irl on a few occasions I can confirm your sona is VERY much on par with your irl style! I've alwyas loved your critter's design tho, It's simple but really cute and crams a lot of personality into the look! (something something that's not the only time you're crammed full, beheh)

You know, I'm not sure. There were other shapes that I had tried during that period of VRChat, but none of them had a connection to me like the otter.

I feel like I'd probably have ended up as an otter regardless, but it'd have probably taken a lot longer to cement it as "me".

main changes I guess was when I was making it, like, originally thought of a yoshi (really liked the big round nose) then changed it to a kobold to have a bit more design freedom, then went with a dragon and the leaf theme (and cmyk sub-theme that I kinda had from the start)

Hmmm, a complicated question

Plurality shenanigans means my fursonas are often recycled forms of the others' retired fursonas. I don't really do much to change them other than making them significantly more chonky. (                      )>.>(                      )

Honestly though that's something I really appreciate about Y'all!! It's really cute and like,, Idk your blobnitohazard effects always make me smile!! There's something kinda beautiful in the transformative nature of how you acquire your sonas, packing the weight on them as you do! To be loved is to be changed, after all!
THIS is a certified deercowsheepie classic....

I don't know if species change counts as design changes, but..
I originally started out as a Snivy, just a smug cookie-obsessed grass snek.

Then I saw CamuuShamuu make the skulldragon species open and wanted to design my own skulldragon.

Some time later, and I made a full ref sheet of my skulldragon.

It's been about 5 or 6 years since I first created my skulldragon.
